    According to estimates from the National Weather Service, Summer 2011 has been the hottest on record for Texas and Oklahoma. Either state may take the lead as having the hottest summer ever recorded in the U.S. when the official numbers come in on Sept. 8, reported the Associated Press.
    This summer is the warmest on record for Dallas, Austin, Waco, Wichita Falls, San Angelo, San Antonio, Del Rio and Abilene, in terms of the highest mean temperature. August 2011 became the warmest month ever recorded in most of these cities.

    Number of 100-degree days for select cities

    -Wichita Falls: 98 days
    -San Angelo: 95 days
    -Waco: 82 days
    -Del Rio: 82 days
    -Abilene: 78 days
    -Austin (Mabry): 80 days
    -Austin (Bergstrom): 67 days
    -Dallas: 68 days

    Wichita Falls has eclipsed its previous record of the highest number of 100-degree days in a year with 98 days in 2011. The previous record was 79 days in the infamously hot year of 1980.

    San Angelo, Waco, Austin, Del Rio and Abilene also set new records for highest number of 100-degree days. San Angelo's previous record was 60 days in 1969. The previous record in Austin Mabry was 69 days in 1925, while Austin Bergstrom's was 55 in 2009. Del Rio's previous record was 78 in 1953. Waco beat its old record of 63 in 1980, while Abilene shattered its previous record of 46 days in 1934.

    *Dallas is one day short of tying its record highest number of 100-degree days in year, which is 69 set in 1980.

    -Waco: 44 days (previous record: 42 days in 1980)
    -San Angelo: 28 days (previous record: 26 in 2010)
    -Austin (Mabry): 27 days (previous record: 21 in 2001)
